The children will learn to understand the differences between their likes and dislikes, what is fair and unfair, right and wrong, recognise their strengths and how they can set a target to improve something. They will understand the roles family members play and we have to care for each other; that we need to be happy at home and at school. They will develop their listening skills and that we need to consider the needs of others and that actions have consequences and how to resolve a problem.
The children will begin to learn to understand what is involved in effective listening through role play and stories, they will learn to listen to others and respond to others, they will discuss the golden rules and the rules for playtimes and why we have them, they will develop their ability to discuss issues and give ideas as well as how to co-operate in groups, taking turns in discussions. They will learn that not everyone has the same view as themselves and that they need to work together.
The children will learn that we change over time and to understand that some things do not change, to understand that some things can be changed quickly whilst others are harder to change. The children will discuss things that have made them proud and recognise their strengths, to share feelings, to explore assertiveness and dilemmas, how to deal with different kinds of feelings.
Children attend life bus in order to learn about friendship and how to d eal with playground situations. All about me and thinking of others.

Children think about and discuss their experiences and feelings relating to starting a new school year and the changes which occur. The issue of bullying is discussed.
Children reflect on their strengths and weaknesses as an individual. They think about how we are all different.
Children reflect on the year so far and begin to think about changes which are going to happen. They think about their achievements this year.
During this term the idea of new beginnings will be explored along with behaving correctly in different situations.
During this term the idea of understand feelings will be explored. This will involve looking at dealing with fear, feeling worried and understanding respect.
During this term the idea of sudden change will be explored. The aspects covered will be dealing with sudden unwelcome change, a change in a group and the feelings associated with the change.
Children will be taught how to deal effectively with peer pressure. Through class discussions, they consider what it is and share their own experiences of it. Through drama and role play, they will be taught to identify when it is happening, why it happens and how to overcome it successfully.
This if followed by learning about drugs. Children will be taught that some drugs are harmful and others are medicines. Children discuss the harmful effects of some drugs and the importance of taking medicines only when prescribed by a doctor or given to them by responsible adults.
Children explore the concept of Responsibility. They discuss the importance of behaving responsibly and consider the consequences of being irresponsible in their own lives. They show their understanding through drama and are able to reflect on examples given by other children.
Children will be taught that people do not always share the same opinions. Through class discussion they will learn that sometimes opposing viewpoints can be very positive and that at times we need to respect the viewpoint of others, even if we do not share it.
Children will learn about physical and emotional changes which will occur. They receive a talk by a medical professional and are able to pose any questions which they may have.
Children research a local, national or global issue of their choice. They present their findings to the rest of the class and finally vote on which issue they are collectively going to address. They create a plan of action which attempts to address their issue. This ends with an evaluation of the effectiveness of the project.
PSHE is designed to suit the individual needs of the classes, as and when they are needed. However, in the autumn term, there is a focus on new beginnings, setting goals, developing confidence and responsibility and making the most of their abilities. We also have a visit from ‘Transport for London’ which focuses on safety on public transport. A visit from the life bus introduces the children to issues surrounding drugs, both medicinal and recreational, and how to resist peer pressure.
In the spring term, the children go on a trip to do with ‘Junior Citizenship’. This prepares them to play an active role as a citizen through a variety of different scenarios. These may include in a fire, at a public park, on or waiting for buses, at the beach and when shopping. We also think about ways we can develop a healthy, safer lifestyle.
In the summer term children focus on respecting the differences between people. With the trip to the Isle of Wight, children develop independent thinking and how to manage on their own, without their parents.
